I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Amazon, and my philosophy about them and their affiliate program is as follows:
Pros: Their worldwide shipping network makes things available to people that would not otherwise have access to them. They are also, in general, more affordable and convenient than other ways of shopping.
Cons: These same ‘benefits’ are detrimental to small businesses and local shops. They have questionable labour practices and environmental policies, and in general, I prefer not to use them or support them.
So why did I sign up for their affiliate programme? I struggled with this for a long time… The answer is, that people will continue to use Amazon regardless of their bad practices and my opinion of it. My request is: Please continue to buy books and support authors, but
-
If you can, buy from your local bookshop.
-
If you order online, buy directly from the publisher or the author.
-
Only if you were going to buy the book from Amazon in any case, please use the link provided.
